On January 10, the “MY Book Day: Yes, It’s Me” event was held at Amorepacific..
Held as part of the MEET YOUR BEAUTY campaign, the event provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the “beauty of being themselves” through books and stories. It expanded the campaign’s literature-based communication on the MEET YOUR BEAUTY Instagram account (@myb_notes) into an offline event, bringing together approximately 130 participants, primarily teenagers, as well as parents, guardians, and employees.
During the book talk, authors Baek Eun-byeol, Lee Eun-gyu, and Hwang Young-mi discussed “beauty,” “self-esteem,” and “being oneself.” In particular, Baek Eun-byeol, who published her first work at the age of 15, spoke candidly about her experience of recovery after going through periods of anxiety and uncertainty. Teenage participants responded by sharing their own concerns and asking questions such as, “How did you get through moments of anxiety?” The author replied with the message that the emotions they are experiencing now may also be part of the process of growing. Rather than simply listening to a lecture, the event felt more like a space for conversation where participants shared their feelings through one another’s experiences.
During the participatory program that followed, participants took time to reflect on themselves by writing down words and sentences that expressed who they are. Setting aside standards of comparison and judgment for a moment, they wrote in their own words to better understand themselves. The sentences left at the event reflected each participant’s thoughts and commitments to understanding themselves. Participants also shared comments such as, “I learned that beauty can be an attitude toward life that goes beyond appearance,” and “It was meaningful to talk about a topic like this while sharing the same space with my child.”
Rather than presenting a standard of beauty, the “MY Book Day: Yes, It’s Me” event centered on the experience of defining the “beauty of being oneself” in each participant’s own words. Through books and stories, different generations shared their thoughts in the same space and found an opportunity to see themselves in a new light.
Through the MEET YOUR BEAUTY campaign, we will continue to create diverse experiences and opportunities for adolescents and young adults to connect and grow with a healthy perception of beauty and a strong sense of self-esteem.
